The Great Spiral Whirlpool Galaxy (M51)

This was the first in my series of space art quilts inspired by the Hubble Telescope deep space images. It is done in the grid method as pixels to show the way the data is transmitted across the heavens. Also I chose this technique because it is reminiscent of the old NASA photos that were low res and pixelated, which gave the background interest. These were all sewn together in adjoining rows. I then used applique to simulate the sweeping dark and light gases of the spiral arms. I used other brightly colored applique pieces and intricate stitching to highlight the gas clouds and stars of the galaxy. I then finished the piece by sandwiching the top, batting and back fabric together and free motion stitching all around the piece
