Mars – The Roman God of War

Third in a series of paintings that highlight how far we’ve come. Each painting bookends our journey from explaining the mysteries of the skies through tales of mythological gods to direct observation and analysis using the scientific methods.

While the Greek god Aries symbolized military might as a way of conquest, the Roman God Mars embodied force of arms as a way of preserving the peace. His symbols are the spear and shield.
An international fleet of missions to Mars over the last forty years have allowed us to explore this planet in unprecedented detail and are paving the way for human exploration.
