This is the fourth work in my deep space art quilt series. I have just completed the Monkeyhead Nebula. Inspired by a Hubble image, the nebula is a star-forming region that hosts dusky dust clouds silhouetted against glowing gas. Massive, newly formed stars near the center of the nebula, are blasting away at dust within the nebula. Ultraviolet light from these bright stars helps carve the dust into giant pillars. In this space art quilt I have used the grid method as a backdrop to show the pixelated data that is sent across the vastness of space and for visual interest. I have then applied applique to soften the edges and give a flow to the piece. I heavily free motion quilted over the whole piece in a variety of thread colors to give the quilt energy and detail and to highlight the ultraviolet light in white thread patterns.
