Membership entitles you to attend the IAAA Workshops, participate in the juried travelling exhibitions and other shows and receive our quarterly newsletter PULSAR. Membership also allows access to members-only parts of this web site including the Members' Directory, calls for art, job referrals, and participation on our private Listserve.
All applications for membership will be reviewed by the Membership Committee. In addition to the membership filing fee, candidates must submit:
In order to facilitate the international character of the Membership Committee, we ask that all submissions be in the above digital forms. If you are unable or need assistance in preparing your work for digital submission, please contact us and we will suggest solutions.
It is expected that the applicant will apply for membership in the tier most appropriate to his/her work or area of interest. The final decision will rest with the Membership Committee.
If you apply for Artist Membership and the Membership Committee awards Journeyman, we heartily encourage you to join the IAAA in the recommended tier and then, after 12 months, request a review of your body of work.
If "Professional Artist" or "Experienced Artist" are chosen in the selections below and your portfolio exhibits Artist-level astronomical art, your membership may be granted at Artist level.
Artist: $51
Artist Members shall be artists whose astronomical and/or aerospace art qualifies them for membership in the artist category, as recognized by the Membership Committee. In order to qualify, their body of work should include a significant portion of astronomical/aerospace art. Artists whose body of work does not currently meet this criteria are requested to choose the Journeyman tier.
Artist Members receive first choice for placement at Workshops, are eligible for participation in IAAA shows, can display the IAAA logo on their web site and in their promotional materials, run for office and be nominated for Fellow.
Journeyman: $46
Journeyman Membership is intended for artists whose primary focus may not currently be astronomical/aerospace, (they may be prolific in other subject matters and are recently entering the astronomical arena) or are just starting out as astronomical artists and would like to discuss and learn the craft from some of our more seasoned members.
If so desired, after a one year period, the Membership Committee will accept requests from Journeyman Members for awarding Artist Membership.
Associate: $46
Associate membership is most appropriate for collectors, publishers, museum curators or staff, gallery owners and astronomical/aerospace art enthusiasts who may not be artists themselves. Associate applicants are not required to submit a portfolio with their application.
ProExchange: $0
ProExchange membership is most appropriate for representatives of Professional Organizations similar to the IAAA. Upon approval, membership is granted on a complementary basis and is most often reciprocal. ProExchange applicants are not required to submit a portfolio with their application.
Journeyman, Associate and ProExchange Members may not participate in shows or hold office but they may participate in other IAAA activities, such as the IAAA Listserve and Workshops.
Fellow: $56
IAAA Fellow Members shall be Artist Members whose astronomical and/or aerospace art is widely recognized for its consistent high standards of professionalism, authenticity, and artistic quality, or any member who has shown consistent, exemplary support for the advancement of the genré of Astronomical Art, as recognized by the current Body of Fellows. IAAA Fellows may place the initials FIAAA as part of their signature when signing artworks and correspondence.
NOTE: Members in good standing are nominated for Fellowship and their induction is voted upon by the Body of Fellows. This is an honor which is bestowed. One may not apply directly for this membership level.
